The crisis emerging along the Nepal-Tibet border is likely to be labelled as a climate-change issue. However, its role in a sustained climate movement will depend on what happens after the images fade and whether farmers, mountain communities, and those least responsible for global warming are empowered to influence the response.
A note on an evolving situation
This article was drafted on 27 August 2026, amid ongoing rescue efforts and fluctuating casualty numbers. Determining the exact cause and the role of climate change in this collapse will need scientific analysis. Nonetheless, the clear signs of rapid warming and ice depletion in the Hindu Kush Himalaya remain well-documented.
After a disaster, a terrible moment arises when the world starts searching for a name to describe what has occurred.
First come the images: valleys filled with mud and ice, bridges torn away, roads disappearing into rivers, homes reduced to fragments. Then come the numbers: the dead, the missing, the displaced, revised upwards as rescue teams reach places cut off from the outside world. Only after that does the argument over meaning begin.
Was it a natural disaster? A glacial disaster? A climate disaster? A failure of planning, warning systems or infrastructure? Is it another example of the injustice faced by countries that have contributed comparatively little to global emissions but are living with some of their most dangerous consequences?
The catastrophic flood now unfolding along the Nepal–Tibet border appears to have been triggered by a huge collapse of ice and rock in the high mountains. The force travelled through steep river valleys, carrying water, sediment and debris into settlements and infrastructure below. At the time of writing, hundreds have been reported dead, and many more remain missing. The final human cost is not yet known.
Understandably, this is already being called a climate-change story. The Himalaya is warming; glaciers are retreating; permafrost and frozen slopes are becoming less stable; glacial lakes are expanding; and mountain communities face increasingly complex combinations of flood, landslide, drought and water insecurity. Yet it is also important not to turn a developing tragedy into a slogan before the evidence is complete.
Climate change rarely acts like a single hand pushing a single stone. It changes the conditions in which disasters become possible: the temperature of ice, the stability of slopes, the timing of snowmelt, the intensity of rainfall, the volume of water stored behind moraine and the exposure of people living downstream. An earthquake, geological weakness or an extreme period of melt may provide an immediate trigger. Warming may have made the landscape more unstable. Both can be true.
The more difficult question is not whether Nepal’s disaster will be turned into a climate story. It almost certainly will. The question is whether it will become part of a meaningful climate movement or merely another brief spectacle of climate suffering.
That is where agroecology enters the conversation. Not as an explanation for the collapse, and certainly not as a claim that different farming methods could have stopped a mountain from moving, but as a way of thinking about what resilience means below the glacier: in the soil, on terraced slopes, in local seed systems, in village economies, in land rights, and in the political relationship between those who bear climate risk and those who control resources.
Before calling it a climate disaster
We should avoid two mistakes.
The first is refusing any connection to climate change unless scientists can attribute every movement of ice and rock to global warming with absolute certainty. That standard misunderstands climate risk. We routinely reduce fire risk without claiming that heat is the only possible cause of every fire. In the same way, a warming mountain environment can become more hazardous even when the immediate cause of an individual collapse is complicated.
The scientific context is not ambiguous. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development reports that the glaciers of the Hindu Kush Himalaya lost around 12 per cent of their area and 9 per cent of their estimated ice reserves between 1990 and 2020. Its wider assessment found that glaciers disappeared 65 per cent faster during the 2010s than in the preceding decade. Even if warming is held below 2°C, substantial further ice loss is expected. Under high-emissions pathways, the losses could be far greater.
This matters far beyond the line at which ice becomes water. The Hindu Kush Himalayan cryosphere helps regulate river systems on which close to two billion people depend. In the short term, accelerated melt can increase floods, lake formation and slope instability. Over the longer term, the loss of stored ice threatens water reliability during dry periods. The danger is therefore not simply “too much water” or “too little water”, but a more erratic hydrological system: destructive flows at one moment and scarcity at another.
The second mistake is to attribute the whole disaster to climate change so quickly that every other cause disappears. Vulnerability is political as well as physical. A hazard becomes a catastrophe through the location and quality of roads, bridges and housing; the reach of early-warning systems; access to safe land; the condition of watersheds; state capacity; poverty; inequality; and whose lives are treated as worth protecting.
Calling an event a climate disaster should widen the field of responsibility, not narrow it. It should lead us from the unstable glacier to global emissions, and downstream to development choices, governance, land tenure, infrastructure, and the daily realities of the people who farm exposed landscapes.

Nepal’s climate story is also a food story
International coverage of Nepal often looks upward. The Himalaya dominates the imagination: glaciers, summits, trekking routes and dramatic river valleys. But the country’s climate vulnerability is also rooted in cultivated land.
Agriculture remains central to employment, food security and rural life, even as its share of the economy has fallen and large numbers of Nepalis migrate for work. Much farming is small-scale, rain-dependent and distributed across extraordinarily varied terrain. The lowland Terai, middle hills and high mountains do not experience climate change in the same way. Farmers may face heat stress and floods in one region, landslides and erosion in another, and shortening snow seasons or altered water availability at higher elevations.
The effects travel through the food system. A landslide can remove a terrace that took generations to form. A damaged road can prevent milk or vegetables from reaching a market. A flood can destroy stored seed as well as a standing crop. An erratic monsoon can disrupt planting calendars built on long experience. When springs decline, or irrigation channels fail, the burden of collecting and managing water often falls disproportionately on women who increasingly carry agricultural work in communities shaped by male out-migration.
This is why treating agriculture as a separate, rural issue is no longer credible. Climate risk moves through watersheds, roads, markets, labour, nutrition and household debt. A harvest failure does not remain in a field. It appears later as higher food prices, migration, lost education, malnutrition, distress sales of land or deeper dependency on imported food and agricultural inputs.
Nepal’s Constitution recognises a right to food and a right to food sovereignty. Those are unusually important commitments. Food sovereignty goes beyond receiving enough calories. It asks who controls land, seed, knowledge and the decisions that shape the food system. In a climate crisis, that distinction becomes critical. A country may import food after a disaster and prevent immediate hunger while still allowing the foundations of local food security to weaken.
What agroecology can and cannot do
Agroecology is often reduced to a collection of environmentally friendly techniques: composting, crop rotation, agroforestry, mixed farming or reduced chemical use. All of those may be part of it, but the full idea is larger. Agroecology applies ecological principles to food and farming while also asking questions about power, knowledge, markets and justice.
It begins with relationships. How does soil structure affect water infiltration? How do trees, crops and livestock support one another? Which crop combinations spread risk? Who owns the land and therefore feels secure enough to invest in it? Whose knowledge counts when agricultural policy is designed? Can farmers save and exchange seed? Are they paid enough to maintain a diverse, resilient landscape, or are they pushed toward short-term production by debt and insecure markets?
In Nepal, many practices now described as agroecological are not new inventions. Terracing, mixed crop–livestock systems, farmyard manure, community forestry, locally adapted crops, seed exchange and the careful use of different elevations are products of accumulated knowledge. This should make us wary of portraying agroecology as an outside solution delivered to passive communities. The work is often to protect, renew and fairly support knowledge that already exists, while combining it with useful science, forecasting and infrastructure.
Agroecology cannot stabilise a glacier. It cannot replace evacuation plans, climate monitoring, safe bridges, engineering, emergency services or rapid cuts in global greenhouse-gas emissions. Nor can a hedgerow or a field of diverse crops absorb the force of a catastrophic debris flood.
But agroecology can influence what happens across the wider landscape and after the immediate shock.
Healthy soils with good organic matter generally absorb and retain more water than compacted or degraded soils. Vegetation and carefully managed agroforestry can reduce ordinary erosion, slow runoff and help stabilise vulnerable ground. However, no planting scheme should be sold as protection against a disaster of unlimited magnitude. Diverse farms are less likely to lose everything when one crop fails. Local seed banks can preserve planting material after floods and provide varieties suited to particular elevations, soils and climatic stresses. Integrated crop and livestock systems can recycle nutrients and reduce exposure to disrupted or expensive imported fertiliser. Farmer organisations can pool labour, knowledge and purchasing power. Shorter supply chains may restore access to food when major transport routes are severed.
These are not spectacular interventions. They rarely produce the dramatic before-and-after imagery favoured by climate campaigns. Yet resilience is frequently built from precisely these quiet forms of redundancy: more than one crop, more than one seed source, more than one route to market, more than one stream of income and more than one person holding essential knowledge.
Resilience is not the same as asking farmers to endure more
A danger is hidden in the language of adaptation. “Resilient communities” can become a flattering description of people whom governments and the international community continually expect to survive intolerable conditions.
Farmers cannot endlessly adapt to a crisis they did little to create. A household cannot terrace its way out of unchecked global warming. It cannot compensate through composting for the loss of a water source, the destruction of a road or repeated floods. Nor should agroecology become a cheap substitute for public investment: a way of celebrating local ingenuity while withholding compensation, infrastructure and climate finance.
A just response must operate at several levels at once.
Globally, high-emitting countries and industries must reduce emissions. Nepal’s exposure to climate damage cannot be separated from the profound inequality between responsibility for warming and experience of its consequences. Climate finance must include grants for adaptation and meaningful arrangements for loss and damage, not simply loans that add to national indebtedness.
Nationally, Nepal needs reliable hazard mapping, early-warning systems that reach remote settlements, land-use decisions informed by changing risk, resilient public infrastructure and agricultural services capable of working across very different ecological zones.
Locally, communities require power as well as consultation. Adaptation designed without farmers, women, Indigenous Peoples, Dalits, land-poor households and pastoral or forest-dependent groups can reproduce the inequalities that made them vulnerable in the first place.
Agroecology is useful here precisely because its strongest tradition is participatory. It treats farmers as experimenters and knowledge-holders, rather than the final recipients of instructions devised elsewhere. But even participatory language can be hollow. Communities must be able to influence budgets, land-use rules, reconstruction and the ownership of resulting projects, not simply attend a meeting after the important decisions have been made.

The land-rights question beneath the climate story
It is impossible to discuss a just agroecological transition without discussing land.
Secure access to land affects whether a farmer can plant trees, rebuild terraces, improve soil, protect a spring or accept several years of lower returns while a system changes. Those with insecure tenure may have every reason to prioritise the next harvest. Tenant farmers and sharecroppers can carry much of the work and risk while lacking the authority to make long-term decisions. Women may do the farming while formal ownership, credit and compensation remain attached to men.
After a disaster, these inequalities can sharpen. Compensation schemes tend to work most smoothly for people who can prove formal ownership. Reconstruction may increase land values and attract outside interests. Families who have lost documents, whose claims are customary, or who farm land without secure title can be excluded. Conservation or risk-reduction projects can also restrict local access to forests, grazing or water in the name of protecting nature.
This is one reason the language of “nature-based solutions” requires care. Restoring vegetation, protecting watersheds and changing land management can deliver real benefits, but solutions imposed without secure community rights can become a new form of dispossession. A forest that stores carbon is not socially sustainable if the people who have maintained it lose access or control.
Land rights are therefore not an optional social addition to climate adaptation. They determine who can adapt, who receives money, who makes decisions, and who is moved out of danger or moved out.
Could this become a climate movement?
Disasters create attention, but attention is not the same as a movement.
A climate story explains an event. A climate movement is an organised effort to change the conditions that produce harm. It requires people, demands, institutions, political opportunity and persistence after the news cycle moves on.
Nepal already has much of the social ground from which such a movement could grow: youth anger over corruption and inequality; farmer and land-rights organisations; community forestry institutions; Indigenous and local knowledge; women’s groups; food-sovereignty commitments; climate campaigners; and a generation acutely aware that forces beyond its control are narrowing its future.
The youth-led political upheaval of 2025 was not primarily a climate protest. It was driven by corruption, nepotism, restrictions on social media, unemployment and a wider collapse of trust. It would be dishonest to repaint it green after the fact. Yet its underlying questions overlap with climate justice: Who benefits from the state? Who bears risk? Why do some young people see migration as their only route to a viable future? Why are public institutions unable to protect people while elites appear insulated from the consequences?
A climate movement could connect these issues, but only if it does not erase their political specificity. Climate change is not a replacement explanation for corruption, class inequality, exclusion or poor governance. It is a force that intensifies them.
For the current disaster to contribute to a lasting movement, public grief would need to become a programme of demands. Those demands might include:
- transparent investigation of the disaster and publication of hazard data;
- early-warning coverage designed with and accessible to remote communities;
- climate-risk tests for roads, hydropower, tourism and settlement planning;
- grants rather than debt-heavy finance for locally led adaptation;
- protection of land and resource rights during relocation and reconstruction;
- compensation that recognises tenants, women farmers and customary users, not only registered owners;
- investment in community seed banks, extension services, water harvesting, diversified farming and farmer-to-farmer learning;
- stronger regional cooperation on glaciers, rivers, weather data and emergency warnings across national borders;
- accountability from high-emitting countries through faster emissions cuts and adequately funded loss-and-damage arrangements; and
- meaningful representation of farmers and mountain communities in climate policy, not their use as symbols at international summits.
Those are the beginnings of a movement because they name decision-makers and redistribute power. “Raise awareness” is not enough. Awareness without organisation fades; sympathy without finance changes little; and resilience without rights can become another demand placed on the vulnerable.
The risk of turning Nepal into a symbol
International climate communication will be tempted to make Nepal stand for something simple: the innocent mountain nation punished by the emissions of richer countries. There is truth in the injustice, but people should not be flattened into symbols.
Nepal is not merely a victim waiting to be rescued. Its communities hold sophisticated knowledge about terraces, water, forests, seed, livestock and climatic variation. Its constitutional recognition of food sovereignty offers language that many wealthier states lack. Its community forestry experience has influenced thinking far beyond its borders. Its farmers are already adapting, experimenting and organising.
At the same time, romanticising local knowledge can be another way of avoiding responsibility. Traditional practices developed under one climate may not be sufficient under rapidly shifting conditions. Communities need meteorological information, public science, healthcare, roads, communications, insurance and finance as well as respect for local knowledge. The useful question is not whether tradition or modernity should win, but how knowledge can be combined under democratic local control.
There is also a danger that agroecology itself becomes part of a soothing story: photographs of terraces and seed keepers offered as evidence that communities can manage. Agroecology is not picturesque poverty. Properly understood, it makes material demands: secure tenure, fair markets, research, public procurement, infrastructure, farmer education and time. It may challenge fertiliser subsidies or development models with powerful beneficiaries. It asks not only how crops are grown but who profits from the food system.
Rebuilding should not mean rebuilding the same vulnerability
The period after rescue is politically decisive. Emergency attention gives way to reconstruction contracts, new roads, resettlement plans and decisions about which livelihoods will be restored. Speed matters, but so does direction.
Reconstruction can lock risk back in. A road rebuilt on the same assumptions about rainfall and slope stability may fail again. A family relocated without cultivable land may be physically safer but economically destroyed. Replacing lost seed only with uniform commercial varieties can deepen dependence. Credit offered to desperate households may restore production while creating unpayable debt. Large engineering works designed without watershed knowledge can transfer risk downstream.
An agroecological approach would view reconstruction at landscape scale. It would connect upper watersheds, forests, farms, settlements, roads and rivers. It would distinguish between the exceptional force of a glacial collapse and the more manageable but frequent risks of erosion, runoff, drought and ordinary flooding. It would ask what combination of ecological restoration, engineering, monitoring and, where unavoidable, rights-respecting relocation is appropriate to each place.
On farms, support could prioritise diversity and autonomy: locally adapted seed, community nurseries, soil restoration, water storage, farmer field schools, agroforestry where ecologically suitable, veterinary support, local processing and routes to market. Public purchasing for schools or relief programmes could buy from recovering local producers rather than allowing emergency food systems to displace them.
None of this is a reason to delay urgent shelter, food or medical assistance. It is a reason to recognise that relief and long-term food sovereignty should not be designed as separate worlds.

From a climate story to climate justice
Will the Nepal disaster be turned into a climate-change story? Yes, because it is occurring within a mountain system already being transformed by warming, and because the images are likely to become part of the visual language of climate breakdown.
But the honest story must retain uncertainty about the precise contribution of climate change to the immediate collapse until scientists can assess it. It must also resist the idea that climate attribution settles every question of responsibility. Even in a warming world, planning, infrastructure, inequality and political choices determine who is exposed and who can recover.
Will it become a movement? That is less certain.
Disaster does not automatically produce progressive change. It can produce solidarity, but also fear, displacement, opportunism and centralised control. A movement emerges only when those most affected have the space to organise, describe the problem in their own terms and convert attention into lasting demands.
Agroecology could give such a movement practical depth. It links the spectacular instability of the high mountains with the slower crises unfolding in soil, seed, water and rural livelihoods. It insists that resilience is ecological and social. It recognises that diversity matters in fields and institutions alike. And it exposes why there can be no fair transition without asking who owns land, who performs agricultural labour, who controls knowledge and who receives public money.
The most important shift would be from seeing Nepal as a warning to seeing Nepalis as political actors.
The country should not have to become a disaster image for the world to understand what Himalayan warming means. Nor should farmers and mountain communities be asked to carry the burden through endless adaptation while emissions continue elsewhere. If this tragedy is to mark a turning point, its legacy must be more than heightened awareness.
It must be safer settlements and accountable institutions. It must be climate finance that reaches communities rather than increasing debt. It must be secure land rights, living soils, diverse seed systems and viable rural futures. It must be global emissions cuts pursued with the urgency that collapsing ice demands.
A climate story tells us that the mountains are changing.
A climate-justice movement asks who must now change with them and who must pay for the future already being lost.
